Something Special for Kol Nidrei
We are collaborating on something special for Kol Nidrei–that will express communally our hopes for the future and our ties to the past. Everyone who would like to participate will be invited to place pure white beach stones with one word written with black pen that conveys either a hope for the new year or a connection to past loved ones (names or values they taught). We will place these stones on the table in front of the bima between the lit Yahrzeit candles. You can come to Kol Nidrei with a beach stone with something written, or you can write on a stone in the foyer before Kol Nidrei on a stone someone else has collected. There will be an urn in the foyer made be Ben Cabot with stones people can take. If you are on the beach between now and Kol Nidrei, you are invited to collect stones for others to use. You can bring them to the Hebrew Center any time the building is open. We will create something beautiful together. Thank you to Nicole and Ben Cabot and Barney Zeitz, who are working together with Rabbi Broitman on this project.

All the best wishes for a sweet & healthy new year.

Our new school year

Dear MVHC Families & Friends:
As the search continues for a new director of our MVHC Religious School and a new school year approaches, the Education Committee is pleased to announce that Lori Sue Herman and Marsha Shufrin have agreed to co-direct the religious school this upcoming school year.  These appointments assure us all of a smooth transition while maintaining the high standard of Jewish education we have come to expect at MVHC.  In order to implement both new and old programming for our youth, we look forward to a year filled with lots of collaborative learning in the classroom, in the synagogue and in our homes.
New this year is our MVHC School Blog.  This blog has been established to keep you posted about the coming year.   If you have not done so, please locate the invitation email and opt to follow the blog.  On this blog we will post links to our new Judaica curriculum and update continuously with pictures, event reminders, weekly lessons, homework assignments, academic expectations, service requirements and thoughts about staying connected and involved with our religious school families.  It is our hope that the blog will keep you better informed and that you will use it as a tool to share your reflections and comments as the school year progresses.
Orientation and registration will be held on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at the MV Hebrew Center at 9:30 am.  A light breakfast will be served.  Please fill out the enclosed registration form and bring it with you to orientation.  Payments will be due at that time. As always, financial information is a confidential matter.  We are committed to providing Jewish education to all our children.  If payment proves to be a hardship for you at this time please speak with or email Lori Sue or Marsha.
During orientation you will be asked to volunteer as a classroom parent, or a chairperson or committee member for holiday & Shabbat programs.  The success of these programs depends on your involvement.  Please think about how you might be able to participate.  More discussion and information will be forthcoming on the blog and during orientation.
Religious School will be held on Wednesdays for grades 2 through 7, commencing on Wednesday September 12, 2012 at 3:30 pm.  For Tisbury School students, we will still provide supervision from 2:45 pm – 3:30 pm.  Students will be required to bring their own after-school snacks. Our Early Childhood Program, known as Shabbat B’yachad, is currently in transition.  We need your help in knowing who is interested in this Experiential Shabbat Program for children ages 3-6.  Please contact Marsha ( if you have children in this age range and would like them to participate.  At the present time we are considering a monthly program.  The day (either Friday evening or Saturday morning) has not been established yet.
Let’s all work together to make this a great year for our kids.
Wishing everyone a happy and healthy new year.
Shannah Tovah,
Lori Sue & Marsha
